Thai Delight with Yam
Familiar with the Turkish Delight dessert?
This very simple, gluten free/vegan dessert is one of my favorite Thai dessert. It has a similar chewy texture to the Turkish Delight. But the soft bouncy and chewy of this dessert come from grated yam. Depending on the amount of sugar that you would use, it could have been a healthy dessert too.😁 🌱Ingredients:
~ 400 g. grated yam
~ 200 - 300 g. sugar
~ 1/2 cup of water / pandan water / rose water
~ 1/2 tsp salt
~ shredded coconut (optional)
How to:
✔️ Peel the yam and grate with a cheese grater, use the smallest shredding holes
✔️ Mix the grated yam with sugar and water. Mix it with your fingers for 5 mins.
✔️ Add the mixed yam into a small chocolate forms, or a small baking trey, or a deep plate. If using a baking trey or a deep plate, the height of mixed yam shouldn’t be thicker than 2 cm. Otherwise it will take longer time to steam.
✔️ Bring the mixed yam to steam in medium heat, for 15 mins if using chocolate form or for 30 mins if using baking trey
✔️ Once it is cooked, the white yam flesh will became clear. Wait until it cools down before taking it out from the form/trey.
Tips and Tricks:
🤓 We normally serve this dessert with shredded coconut that mixed with a pinch of salt. The shredded coconut will last longer if you also steam it for at least 5 mins.
🤓 No steammer! Dont worry. Put a deep plate or a bowl upside down in a pot, and put the yam’s form on top of it. Add water to the bottom of the pot. The key is to make sure that water won’t touch the yam’s form
🤓 You can make it as a healthy wine gum by adding 3 tbsp of tapioca starch / corn starch, and add different types of fruit purée to the mix. .
